The Ramadan Content Window: What Producers and Distributors Need to Know
For anyone working in content production or distribution targeting the Arab world, Ramadan is the most important period of the broadcast calendar. Viewership across MENA increases by 30–60% during the holy month, advertising rates peak, and acquisition budgets at GCC broadcasters and streaming platforms reach their highest point of the year. Miss the window, and you miss the year.
This guide explains how the Ramadan acquisition cycle works, when to pitch, and how Novo Media Studios helps producers and rights holders reach GCC broadcasters before the window closes.
When Does the Ramadan Acquisition Window Open?
The most common misconception about Ramadan content is that acquisition happens close to the month itself. In reality, the window opens much earlier. GCC broadcasters and major MENA streaming platforms begin reviewing and acquiring Ramadan content in the August–October period, with the bulk of acquisition decisions made by December or January.
By February, most GCC broadcaster acquisition budgets for the coming Ramadan are committed. Rights holders and distributors who arrive after this point are typically competing for a small number of remaining slots at reduced rates — or being told to come back the following year.
The practical implication: if your content is not in front of buyers by October or November, the Ramadan opportunity has largely passed for that year.
What Content Performs Best During Ramadan?
Ramadan viewing patterns are distinct from the rest of the year. Families watch together, often in the post-Iftar evening hours. Content that is family-friendly, values-driven, and culturally resonant performs best. The top-performing categories for Ramadan acquisition are:
Drama and series — particularly productions with strong family and community themes. Turkish and Egyptian drama series dubbed into Arabic consistently perform well. Ramadan series commissions are a major investment for GCC channels.
Islamic and religious content — programming covering Islamic history, Quranic studies, stories of the prophets, and spiritual guidance. GCC broadcasters dedicate significant airtime to this category throughout Ramadan and acquire content year-round to build their libraries.
Children’s animation — Ramadan scheduling for children includes a significant animation block. Halal-certified children’s animation with Islamic values themes is in particular demand from GCC family channels.
Documentary content — factual programming on Islamic civilization, science, history, and culture performs well with adult audiences during Ramadan, particularly in the late-night and pre-Suhoor slots.
Arabic Dubbing and the Ramadan Window
One critical bottleneck for international content targeting the Ramadan window is Arabic dubbing. A documentary, animation series, or drama produced outside the Arab world needs to be Arabic-dubbed before it can be considered by the majority of GCC broadcasters. Dubbing production takes time — typically four to twelve weeks depending on content length and dialect requirements.
This means that for content targeting the October–December acquisition peak, Arabic dubbing should ideally be underway by August at the latest. Rights holders who come to us in November asking for a Gulf Arabic dub of a 26-episode series by January are facing a very tight timeline.
Novo Media Studios runs a dedicated Ramadan content preparation service, helping rights holders get their content Arabic-dubbed and pitch-ready ahead of the acquisition window.
